New E=MC² Album Review

First Listen: Mariah Carey

Thursday, March 20, 2008

We were invited along for a sneak preview of the American diva's new album.

As the most successful female recording artist in history, a new Mariah Carey album is always guaranteed to be a big event.

Her latest release, the rather obscurely entitled 'E=MC²' is no exception, bringing together the cream of the R&B crop, with big names like Stargate (Rihanna, BeyoncĂ©), Nate 'Danjahandz' Hills (Britney, Madonna) and Swizz Beats (Mary J Blige, Eve) all contributing tracks.

Uptempo club track, 'That Chick' is a real highlight, with a chorus so infectious it's got 'ma$$ive hit' written all over it. 'For The Record' is this album's 'We Belong Together', a heart-breaking tale of the one that got away, while 'Side Effects' gives us a rare glimpse behind Mariah's celebrity persona, demonstrating her vulnerability and reluctance to trust people over an electrifying Scott Storch beat.

Janet Jackson's current squeeze and long-time Carey collaborator, Jermaine Dupri's four tracks are a little disappointing - 'Love Story' is Mariah-by-numbers, while 'Thanx For Nothin' is a poor man's 'Butterfly'. Guest appearances from Young Jeezy, Damien Marley and T-Pain might add to the album's A List credentials, although they sadly bring little to the table.

Overall though, it's an accomplished effort and we reckon it will follow in the footsteps of her last album 'The Emancipation Of Mimi' by becoming a ma$$ive worldwide hit. It's released in the UK on April 14th and is preceded by the single 'Touch My Body' on March 17th.
